International Yoga Day

The World Yoga Day, also known as the International Yoga Day, falls on Wednesday, June 21. The theme of this year is  "Yoga for Health."

Yoga originated in ancient India around 5,000 years back. Yoga is an amalgam of physical, mental and spiritual practice which helps enhance one's physical as well as mental health along with the self-healing ability.

Practising yoga regularly helps to improve:

Flexibility
Respiration
Posture
Muscle strength
Weight management
Metabolism
Bone health
Blood flow
Immunity
Yoga also aids in combating stress causing changes in the genes, a study carried out by the researchers from Psychology at Coventry University in the United Kingdom, with Ivana Buric as the lead researcher, pointed out.

Don't take good health for granted

No one wants to be sick. But tell me very frankly when do we start to take notice and some action about our health, only after we fall sick or are in the process of losing our health. During this time, we make all sorts of promises and resolutions. But once we get it back, we often return to our old ways. Isn't this true??

Good health is one of those things that is usually taken for granted. Chronic, degenerative conditions usually takes years, even decades, to develop, nothing develops overnight.

For example, heart attack or a tumor on your body, do you think it developed overnight? No way. It took a long time to get to a size where it becomes visible. All your hardwork of abusing your body in the form of unhealthy lifestyle, stress, junk eating, toxic buildup, weakened immune system which had probably been around for years too showed it's effect. Do realize that, once a disease takes root, the decline usually starts gaining momentum.

In rainny season wash all vegetables and fruits thoroughly, esp green leafy vegetables, cauliflower, broccoli, brinjal, roots and tubers which harbour larvae, worms and dust. Clean them under running water.

Steaming them is the best way to get rid of germs. Soaking the greens in salt water for about 10minutes can help remove insects.

Research has shown that using just plain old water can remove 98% of the bacteria when it is used to rinse and soak produce.

If you decide to use vinegar, research has shown that a 3 part water to 1 part vinegar is most effective. A soak of five to10 minutes should be sufficient. Try to get the water temperature as close to that of the fruit or vegetable that you wish to clean. When you have a variety of fruits and vegetables, it might be best to wash these separately.

Antioxidant rich chutney

Nutritious Antioxidant Rich Chutney.

Made using fresh coriander, mint, spinach, curry leaves ...apt for any season....improves immunity. ..
beneficial for people suffering from Cholesterol, BP, Diabetes.

Ingredients -
• Coriander leaves - 1 small bunch
• Palak -1/2 bunch
• Mint leaves a few
• Curry leaves 12-15 leaves
• Tomato - 1 small
• Onion – 1
• Garlic – 7-10 cloves
• Lemon juice – 1-2 tbsp
• Green chilli – 1-2
• Ginger - a small piece
• Roasted flaxseed powder - 1 tbsp
• Dalia (split channa dal)- 1tbsp
• Salt to taste

Method -

Grind all the ingredients together. Serve as an accompaniment with dosa, idli, dhokla, chilla, pancakes, chapati, upma , make sandwiches.

This chutney is beneficial for people suffering from Cholesterol, BP, Diabetes.

Don't skip Suhoor (pre-dawn meal)

Suhoor is regarded as a benefit of the blessings in that it allows the person fasting to avoid the crankiness or the weakness caused by the fast.

Eat suhoor(sehri) just prior to dawn. Yes, it's hard to get up at that hour, which is why it has many benefits and rewards. And this morning meal is generally recognized as the single most important meal of the day. as this is needed to get you through the day. Many people eat a late night meal and sleep through till the dawn prayers. This is not advisable.

Skipping Suhoor prolongs the fasting period as your body will need to rely on the previous meal to provide you with all the nutrients and energy until Iftar (dinner). Due to the longer hours of fasting, you are more likely to feel dehydrated and tired during the day. Furthermore, skipping Suhoor also encourages overeating during Iftar, which can cause unhealthy weight gain.

So all those doing Ramadan please eat suhoor.

Idlis are made from a combination of rice and urad dal which is fermented and then steamed.

Both these processes are very good as it invovles predigestion by bacteria, cooking with no oil at all
and hence easier to digest. The fermented process increases the bioavailability of nutrients like folic acid, riboflavin, niacin, thiamine, biotin.

However most restaurants use baking soda to speed up getting the idli batter ready and while too much baking soda does destroy nutrients and affects the digestive system in the long run. Similarly the ready made idli batter also contains some amount of soda.

Another important things is the combination of cereal n pulse improves the quality of protein i.e gives the best quality protein comparable to that of an egg which is considered excellent.

So go ahead relish those wonderful idlis on a super Sunday morning whether at home or out.

Experts now say you should start standing up at work for at least two hours a day -- and work your way toward four.

Today, the average office worker sits for about 10 hours - office meeting, emails, eating meals,  computer etc.

Medical researchers have long warned that prolonged sitting is dangerous, associated with a significantly higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and depression, as well as muscle and joint problems.

Some have gone on to say that the office chair is worse for your health than smoking and kills more people than HIV. Even working out vigorously before or after work may not compensate for extending sitting.

Metabolism slows down 90 percent after 30 minutes of sitting. The enzymes that move the bad fat from your arteries to your muscles, where it can get burned off, slow down. The muscles in your lower body are turned off. And after two hours, good cholesterol drops 20 percent. Just getting up for five minutes is going to get things going again. These things are so simple they’re almost stupid.”

According to the expert statement released in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Americans should begin to stand, move and take breaks for at least two out of eight hours at work.

Go on a leg powered journey
The simplest way to get back into the way of life of our ancestors is to travel in a more traditional way. We didn’t evolve driving on a motorway or riding a train. Slowing down, and walking to the top of a mountain, canoeing across a lake, riding a horse or being taken on a journey through wild country by a husky dog sled are all great ways to reconnect with nature.

Similarly walking barefoot on the grass or along the beach. Focus on the feeling of your feet connecting with the earth and the sense of feeling grounded that can come along with this.

We’re probably throwing out more food/money than we realize. We all do…but few of us recognise this and fewer still admit to it! In fact each of us throws away on average 120kg of food a year. but what can you and I do about it?? Do I really waste food?

The following  three R’s can save us!!!

REDUCE – food wastage by buying more efficiently.
Take a list with you to the grocery store; you’re less likely to buy items that you won’t use. Even better option is to plan your meals for a week which eases out shopping and cooking both.

REUSE- unwanted item where possible instead of disposing them
Donate any unopened non-perishable items that you definitely won’t use.
Clean out your fridge/freezer/cupboards on a somewhat regular basis and use  anything that is getting near to the manufacturers “best by” date.

RECYCLE - compost
Use any leftover food,use your creativity.
If at times you have brought a vegetable, can’t reduce it, it already started spoiling so can’t reuse it, you’re down to “recycle”, that’s where composting comes in, possibly some nice soil will magically appear.

The host country for this year’s celebration is Canada and has chosen the theme “Connecting People to Nature” for 2017, which invites people to enjoy the outdoors and to take forward the call to protect the Earth that we share.

“It reminds us of what a treasure nature is, and encourages us all to protect and appreciate our environment.”

It is an ideal occasion to go out and enjoy your outdoor picnic or have a nature walk in wilderness areas.

Connecting to nature can involve all the physical senses: why not take off your shoes and get your feet (and hands) dirty; don’t just look at the beautiful lake ( if you have one in your area), jump in! Take a hike (if your surrounding area permits) at night and rely on your ears and nose to experience nature.

Why not do your bit to green the urban environment, by greening your street or planting a window box.

In the age of asphalt and smartphones and among the distractions of modern life, connections with nature can be fleeting. But with little help, our environment can be clearer than ever that we need harmony between humanity and nature so that both are able to thrive.

Buy local, organic foods that do not use chemicals in the production process.

Buy food with a thought. Do not buy more food than you need to avoid food wastage.

Go vegetarian atleast once a week.

Plant a vegetable garden.

Cook food with care, serve just enough,use what is left.

Do not waste water, like do not let it run while we brush our teeth.

Request smaller portions at restaurants.

Avoid excess food packaging, use cloth bags, reuseable cups, non plastic bottles.

Avoid plastic bottles.

Don’t litter.

#WorldMilkDay is celebrated on 1st June in many countries across the world.

Significance - to raise the awareness about the importance of milk and its products as part of a #health #balancediet.

"Milk is the #FirstFood for Human

It was initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to celebrate all aspects of milk as a global food.

Did you know, Milk is a #completefood except for iron and vitamin C. It contains lipids, #proteins, carbohydrates, salts, minerals like #calcium and phosphorus, vitamins like Vit A,  B complex– in other words, all healthy nutrients required by our body.

I know most of you don't like milk, we make faces...give excuses like it does not suit our system, other mammals milk is not designed for our body n so on right. ..

To make it interesting, you can add different flavours to it. Saffron, cinnamon, vanilla essence, rose essence, dry fruit powder, strawberry squash thandai syrup etc.

Still not a liking for milk then have milk products like panir, curd, buttermilk,  cheese, ghee etc.

Benefits of milk - strong bones,  muscles, improves sleep,  quality of hair and skin and also acts as a naturalantacid.
